Sod and his law strike again!! At least the rain was warm and there wasn’t a wind.

As my partner in crime, Ellen, is walking with a stick and couldn’t attend, I was, as usual, harassed. However, while their Dad was running, I had two young gentlemen who helped, Tom and Harry Walters. Harry acted as photographer and Tom was timekeeper.

Daniel and Alex Heppell ran, and were most annoyed when their Mam made them return after 21/2 km. Their comment was: “next time it’s all the way’’.

I have come to the conclusion that we have some very hardy (or daft) souls in this neck of the woods. Although it wasn’t very cold, I was still wearing an anorak, but three runners stripped off and went for a SWIM! The sky was grey and so was the sea. UGH!

However, most people went back to the house where there were refreshments, laughter, and a party atmosphere. GREAT!

Times:

Michael (?) 38.27

Robert Dodds 40.20

Steven Lee 41.40

Justin Walters 53.11

Melanie Heppell 53.12

Maxine Hall 53.42

Seriously though, I would like to thank everyone who contributed, in any way at all, to making the fun run such a happy and successful event.

The day started warm and dry then later ……. still warm but wet ….. very wet! This, however, didn’t stop the fantastic people of Haltwhistle turning out to support us.

The only thing that wasn’t there was heavy furniture. After that if you had named it, I’m sure we could have supplied it! All bar the kitchen sink.

Coffee and biscuits were part of the entry fee (£1), with as many refills as you could consume. (We don’t stint folk around here). There was also a cake stall, tombola, books, videos, and a raffle.

Each of the four charities received £430 each, which is excellent.

I’m sure I speak for every charity concerned when I say ‘thank you’ to all those who helped in whatever way they did, but particularly to Joan who allowed us to keep everything in her house. To Christine whose sandwiches were delicious at lunchtime. But mainly to Richard who has organised, collected, and sold items all year round so that we could all benefit by such a large amount.

Well, Trevor and I were up, the bottles all tagged and packed, and the car loaded up………but the rain hadn’t stopped from the previous day, and now there was a high wind to add to it all.

Two ‘cuppas’ later we decided to call it off. The thought of trying to keep the gazebo anchored to the ground, and then the very real possibility of being ‘tractor towed’ off the field didn’t seem like a good idea at all. So it was all put back from whence it came……..and the kettle went on again!!!

Better luck next time….we hope!

This was our first attempt at running a bottle tombola, Lynn and Alison were up bright and early to set up our stall. It started off so very well, our gazebo very quickly became a tent of sunshine as we hid from the rather black clouds over head.

We met some really lovely people who came and bought raffle tickets from our stall, unfortunately due to the typical British weather we had to pack up early as the heavens opened. We are looking forward to doing the next one (hopefully with nicer weather).

All donations are very much appreciated and all go towards a good cause, thank you to everyone who donated bottles and to the people who purchased raffle tickets on the day. We couldn’t do without you all!

Thanks to the generosity of three people this past month, we have now ordered and are installing a special Gebert toilet and support rails. This will give the children staying with us much more independence.

Purchases made during the last nine months include a mobile hoist and an ordinary wheelchair, so that parents can save space by not packing their own.

We have had some lovely, unexpected gifts too, such as a baby’s rocking crib, a BIG toaster, a steamer…………..the list goes on. All that we know of these items is when we receive a phone call and a voice on the other end says, ” I thought you might like……” or “ I’ve just left…….”

The kindness that we are continually shown is very humbling, and all we can say is

THANK YOU

Thankfully, we were so busy that we had to lay another table…..and there isn’t an ‘after’ photo!

Although the time for opening was 9.30, that went out the window. The first customers came in at 9 o’clock!

From then on it was manic. There must have been about 250 people through the doors, and I knew them all…bar about 12.

For two hours we never stopped. I was absolutely lathered! My face was like a beetroot, (how elegant is that?) and all my clothes were wet with sweat. Oh I forget, ladies don’t sweat…they merely glow.

Luckily the rain didn’t start until about 11.45am by which time we were clearing up and the customers had gone home. We made £400.00 after all expenses had been paid, which was excellent!

Haltwhistle people are the most generous in the UK (not that I’m biased). Every Saturday, except the month around Christmas and New Year, there is a coffee morning. It is a social event and everyone goes. It doesn’t matter what it is in aid of, the morning is well supported. It’s no wonder that I’m proud of my area, the people, and my roots.

My grateful thanks to all those who helped……and especially to those who contributed!!!!

Maureen Hardcastle, Chairperson
