Well done and a big thank you to everyone who took part in the May 2008 CHIN-UP Beach Run.

Congratulations to Adam Fletcher and Lyndsey Senior for winning the Mens’ and Womens’ categories respectively. (Pictures to follow)

The run went well. It was windy….again, but it stayed fair….and we kept hold of the tent this time!! There were eighteen runners, including the Senior family from Surrey, who left us a magnificent donation of £100.00. The McConnell and the Barnes families, who have stayed at Jonathan’s Halfway House, came. Lee and Mick ran, and the rest of the families, including Grandma and Auntie, went to the house and made the teas.

All the runners said the they had enjoyed themselves (mad fools) and would run again either at Christmas, or next year. The ladies from Border Home Bake, Haltwhistle also ran. It was suggested that they run to the rock crossing and then turn back, but no, they did the whole course. We think they were brave for attempting it as they hadn’t really prepared! So many thanks to them for their support.

Barbour Trust Donation

Chin-Up would like to express its immense gratitude to The Barbour Trust for its recent magnificent donation in the sum of £8,000. This gift will provide the funds to maintain and run our holiday home at Seahouses for a full year. The Barbour Trust was was set up in 1988 to support local and national projects dealing with a variety of community issues including welfare, health, homelessness and unemployment as well as donating funds to support international disasters such as the recent Tsunami tragedy. The Trust also continues to be a substantial benefactor in the local North East community, and has invested significantly in projects such as the Alnwick Gardens, Laing Art Gallery and The Sage Gateshead. Ugly Betty in Newcastle

Mode Magazine presents ‘UGLY BETTY - THE FASHION SHOW’.

The glitz, glamour, gossip, scandal and intrigue from Mode Magazine arrived in Newcastle for summer with the fashion show to end all fashion shows. Taking inspiration from the cult TV series ‘Ugly Betty - the Fashion Show’ presented a striking fusion of this summer’s hottest hair, make-up and fashion looks for men and women. Featuring designs from exclusive brands including Gucci, Armani and Versace, courtesy of men’s designer store Vida and sensational women’s wear from Fenwick, fabulous hair from Barry & Bobby, as well as a host of stunning models and surprise character appearance (or two!). Raising funds for Chin-Up, this exclusive show was accompanied by a drinks and canape reception, mexican nibbles and live DJs and entertainment, all in the specially dressed Betty inspired luxury venue of Apartment, Luxebar and Dining Room, Collingwood Street, Newcastle.

Beach Run 2007 - Results

Well done and a big thank you to everyone who took part in the 2007 CHIN-UP Beach Run.

Congratulations to Ash Henderson (left) and Angharad Porteous (right) for winning the Mens’ and Womens’ categories.

The day started off fine with a gentle breeze blowing in-shore. The tent was set up and last minute matters attended to. Unfortunately, the weather deteriorated rapidly and what felt like a gale sprang up, taking the tent flying down the beach with intrepid helpers Maureen, Susan and Jim hanging on for dear life. Numbers, papers and safety pins were strewn all over the sand and sadly, our new tent was damaged beyond repair and had to be dumped. Fortunately Maureen, Susan and Jim lived to see the beach race through to the end and to fight another day!

The race runners arrived, took part and made the day with their patience and sense of fun. The event was a great success and everybody, despite the weather, seemed to enjoy themselves. Many thanks to all those who took part and to those who gave of their time so freely. We will be staging another race next year and hope that all goes to plan.

Apologies to the beach combing chap with his metal detector who arrived shortly after the race ended. He must have thought he had found a treasure trove when he stumbled across our stash of buried safety pins!

Miss Kitty Lit’teur, drag queen sensation, and a wonderful group of supporting acts wowed us with a fantastic night of singing, dancing and comedy on 27th April 2007 at the Northumbrian Suite, Federation Brewery. We had lots and lots of fun and a very successful auction with over £1,700 being raised for the charity. We would like to thank Stuart Clark, his family, Kitty, her friends, all the Brewery staff and all those who supported us on the night. We hope you had as good an evening as we did.

DO YOU HAVE THE VOICE?

The auditions at THE SAGE GATESHEAD on 24th, 25th and 26th January 2007 to find THE VOICE for our charity CD, “I Find Your Love” by Beth Nielson Chapman, to be accompanied by the Northern Sinfonia were very successful, the winner has been chosen and the CD recorded. All profits from the sale of the CD will go to the charity.

Chillingham Castle

On 17th November 2006, a sponsored ALL NIGHT VIGIL took place in haunted Chillingham Castle, near Alnwick, Northumberland when seven brave folks sat through the wee small hours from 11pm to 3am. Over £500 was raised for the charity from this event and we would like to thank those intrepid souls who took part and all those who were so generous in their sponsorship.

Abandon hope all ye who enter here!

Perhaps he should have taken a packed lunch.

Fashion Show and Auction

The Fashion Show at the Hilton, Gateshead was a resounding success with more than £13,000 being raised. Guests ate, drank, spent lots of money and the band played on.

Colin Briggs was compere and auctioneer for the evening and had a fine time with the ladies!

Jonathon Ross’s suit was a big hit and sold for a fantastic £1,500.

We had fashion for all ages

and something just for the ladies!

Even Peter Pan and Little Witchie flew in for the evening.

Oh dear - the surprise wasn’t quite what he expected!

Wheelie Good Fun

Edward Common and family enjoy a day on the beach at Seahouses thanks to our wonderful new beach wheelchair.

The GoodFund in association with the North-East based Post Code Lottery have been kind enough to provide us with over £5,000.00 of funding. A part of this has been used to import, from America, a specially designed beach wheelchair with pneumatic wheels for use on the beach allowing more poorly children to enjoy all the fun of the seaside on our beautiful Northumberland Coast. Following our request for assistance to the National Trust, that organisation is looking into providing disabled access to the beach close to Jonathan’s Halfway House which will obviously be of benefit not only to users of our holiday home, but also to local residents.

The remainder of the funding has been used to install a hoist in the specially adapted downstairs bedroom of the house and to purchase a wonderful two-storey Wendy House and some lovely furniture for the garden.

THANKS TO THE GENEROSITY of thousands of people, we have been able to buy a holiday home in the Seahouses area of Northumberland. This ‘halfway house’ opened early in 2006 and gives much needed holiday breaks to families with a terminally ill child/young person.
